EEF represented at Cabinet meeting in Birmingham
Release date: 17/09/2008
The Midlands was the venue for the first Cabinet meeting outside London since 1923 on Monday 8 September. The Cabinet meeting in Birmingham coincided with the launch of the National Manufacturing Strategy and members of EEF were invited along to meet ministers.
Elaine Clarke from Birmingham International Airport and Andrew Churchill from JJ Churchill joined
Terry Slater
, EEF’s Acting Region Director for the Midlands in representing EEF at the launch.
The strategy includes a commitment to develop business opportunities associated with a low carbon economy; a Programme, to promote a better understanding of manufacturing in schools and an expansion of Apprenticeships by inviting bids from large manufacturers to train additional apprentices including for their supply chain.
EEF welcomed the government’s drive to improve the image of manufacturing but they informed ministers that it is now time for the government to deliver on the commitments it has already made. Commitments to simplify the skills system and making public procurement more outcome-focussed are longstanding but little progress has been made. They also expressed the view that the government need to back this strategy up with assistance to help manufacturing through the current tough times.
