EEF launches joint roadshows with HSE on noise and vibration

Release date: 30/06/2005

EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) have launched a UK wide roadshow on noise and vibration to give valuable guidance to employers about their obligations under a new EU Directive. (1)

The roadshow will take the form of seminars across the UK and are aimed at managing directors, production managers, health and safety advisers and safety representatives. They will provide invaluable advice on what the new regulations mean in practice, how to manage the risks, practical solutions and what to do for effective health surveillance. In particular, the seminars will provide employers with a unique opportunity to talk to experts from HSE and ask questions on issues that concern them.

EEF recognises that there are real issues to deal with in terms of noise and hand arm vibration. HSE estimate that over 1.1 million people are at risk from high levels of noise and about 1.7 million people are at risk from hand arm vibration.

However, EEF has consistently challenged the grounds for European action on Whole Body Vibration (WBV), regarding this as an unnecessary requirement with no benefit to health and safety. The International (ISO) Standard for measuring whole body vibration, says that there is no causal link with low back pain. Ergonomic factors such as bending and lifting, are far more significant than vibration levels in contributing to low back pain, which is common among the general population.

The seminars will take place at 13 locations across the UK during September, October and November.
