EEF's new CEO pays North East a visit

Release date: 04/03/2008

The new Chief Executive Officer of EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, paid his first visit to the region in his new role.

The visit, part of Gilbert Toppin’s tour of the EEF offices across England, was an opportunity for EEF Northern Director, Alan Hall, to showcase the strength of the manufacturing sector in the North of England.

Alan Hall commented, “Gilbert has joined us at a critical time as we seek to influence the environment for a revitalised manufacturing sector facing unprecedented global challenge through competition and climate change. This visit has been a clear sign of Gilbert’s commitment to manufacturers in the region.”

Alan added, “Manufacturing remains a key sector in the North East and it has been a pleasure to share our success stories with Gilbert, and to hear his views on the future and the challenges we face.”

Gilbert is an engineer and a business services specialist who has held a succession of senior roles in the consulting industry, including Chief Operating Officer for European Consulting at Deloitte, where he was a senior Partner and Board member.

Whilst at the EEF Northern offices Gilbert expressed confidence in the North East’s ability to continue to be a ‘manufacturing hub’. He also highlighted the importance of apprentices in combating skills shortages.

During his two-day visit Gilbert hosted a private dinner with representatives from a selection of EEF Northern member companies and met a number of key staff members in the EEF Northern office.
