Manufacturers prepare to capitalise on the low carbon economy

Release date: 18/09/2008

Manufacturers from across the North East are attending a unique summit to explore the opportunities presented by a low carbon economy.

Significant commercial opportunities for manufacturers to profit from the move to a low carbon economy were identified in a 2008 report from EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, and Deloitte, the business advisory firm. The EEF summit 'Delivering the low carbon economy' offers a unique format for manufacturers to utilise these opportunities and create profitable products, services and technology that provide the solutions to the demand created by the drive to a low carbon economy.

Tony Sarginson, Regional Manager at EEF, said "It is clear that moving to a low carbon economy will create significant business opportunities for the region's manufacturers. However, the only way we can exploit them is if companies are quick to identify the opportunities and move swiftly to take advantage of them.

"Our delivering the low carbon economy summit is designed to speed-up the process by bringing together the key players, support organisations and funding providers so our manufacturers are ready to exploit the opportunities."

The summit welcomes leading manufacturing and energy experts from EEF and the Technology Strategy Board. Support organisations, One NorthEast and the Carbon Trust, will discuss the range of financial support available and how to access it.

Manufacturers also have the unique opportunity to speak to the support organisations and experts at the ‘support surgery’, where private meeting rooms are available for one-to-one discussions.

EEF’s CEO, Gilbert Toppin, added “Innovation in low carbon products and services is a significant step towards cementing a company’s position in a low carbon economy.

“Linking into the supply chains being formed can establish an early toehold in emerging global markets.

“Manufacturers in the North East have proven that the UK, and the North East, can lead the way in low carbon technology. The involvement of the support organisations One NorthEast, The Carbon Trust and ourselves is extremely important to help manufacturers invest in developing new products and technology.”

One NorthEast, the Carbon Trust, the May Day Network and British Gas Business are supporting the event. Alex Fowler, Energy Analysis and Policy Specialist Advisor at One NorthEast said “The move to a low carbon economy opens up significant opportunities for growth and investment. Manufacturers should be looking at where they can prosper now in order to take advantage.”

The Delivering the low carbon economy - opportunities for manufactures event is being held at St James’ Park on 26 November 2008. More information can be found at www.eef.org.uk/lowcarbon or by calling Greg Ward on 0191 4165656.
