New laws regulating employment tribunal representatives

Under the Compensation Act 2006 (the Act) and various Regulations made under the Act, anyone who represents claimants in an employment tribunal in England and Wales must now be registered with (and pay a fee to) a new Regulator. Contravention of the Act is a criminal offence.

Amicus and T&GWU officially merge to become UNITE

Following the recent vote by members of both Amicus and the T&GWU in favour of a merger, the new merged union, Unite, came into effect on Tuesday 1 May 2007 with the union’s Joint Executive Council taking office.

Case law update - Truth hurts or blaming the victims?

In St Helen’s Borough Council v. Derbyshire, the House of Lords held that the Council had victimised the claimants when it sent letters to employees pointing out that if the claimants succeeded at the tribunal it would imperil the future of the school meals service in which they worked.

Case law update – Court of Appeal on work-related stress

The Court of Appeal qualifies some of the guidance previously given by the Court of Appeal in the landmark decision of Sutherland v Hatton on the approach the courts should take when deciding if an employer is liable for work-related stress.

Regional Skills Partnership Cross-cutting Issues 2007

The Regional Skills Partnership has produced a significant paper on skills in the region and wish employers to carry out a 'reality check' on their findings. It is a significant piece of work, 47 pages full of detail, however it is important that employers are satisfied that the findings make sense to them and that there are no glaring 'wrong' assumptions being made and that the findings 'ring true'. Road Charging Survey

Roger Tym & Partners have been commissioned by Centro and West Midlands Authorities to investigate economic impacts of road user charging in the region. The main focus of this work is an indepth survey with around 80 businesses in the West Midlands from three sub areas (the Black Country, Birmingham and Solihull, and Coventry).

Preparation for Retirement

A one day seminar to be held on Wednesday 20 June 2007.
