The Ban on Smoking in the Workplace – just a few days to go

The Health Act 2006 will from Sunday 1 July 2007 make all workplaces and enclosed public spaces free of smoke.

Updated Acas Guides

Acas has updated its website guides on maternity and annual leave. It has also just published two research papers on sexual orientation discrimination.

Case law update: Disability Discrimination – burden of proof in reasonable adjustment cases

Project Management Institute v Latif is the first EAT decision which addresses the issue of how a tribunal should apply the burden of proof when dealing with a claim for failure to make reasonable adjustments under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (the DDA). It also is a good reminder for employers of the scope of their duty to make all reasonable adjustments: the fact that an employer has made some adjustments may not be enough if further or different adjustments would have been reasonable.

Invitation to apply for membership of the newly established WEEE Advisory Board

DTI are establishing a new independent body to advise the Government on the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and Regulations. Individuals in the various sectors affected by the WEEE Regulations, as well as from a broader sustainable development background are encouraged to apply for the positions of Chair and members. A copy of the invitation is attached. The closing date for applications is 13 July 2007.
