Case law update - Employers must consult about the reason for redundancy
In UK Coal Mining v National Union of Miners (NUM), the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) departed from earlier case law to decide that the obligation to consult over avoiding proposed redundancies where a workplace is closing also requires consultation over the reason for the closure.

Companies across the region urged to hire Technology Centre Apprentices
Seventy two first year apprentices aged between 16 and 19 have begun their apprenticeships at EEF West Midlands Technology Centre this autumn. Forty one of the apprentices are employed with major companies from the region, the other thirty one are hunting down employment opportunities within the engineering and manufacturing industries while they train at the centre. Pay settlements in manufacturing remain at stable
The latest pay data from EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, shows that, in the 3 months to the end of September 2007, the average level of pay settlements in manufacturing was 3.2%, the same as that reported for the previous 3 month period to the end of August.

EEF responds to European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register Regulation
The European Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (E-PRTR) Regulation requires the UK ’s current system for collecting data on emissions through the separate national pollution inventories to be modified.
