Important Information for Producers, Retailers and Distributors of Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Following a number of delays, the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations were laid before Parliament on 12th December 2006. These Regulations will require producers, retailers and distributors of certain types electrical and electronic equipment to meet the environmental costs of dealing with these products at the end of their useful life.

The new Regulations came into force on 2nd January 2007 and place specific duties on producers, distributors and retailers, including:

  • By 15 March 2007 producers will need to join an approved producer compliance scheme to ensure that they are able to comply with the Regulations from 1 July 2007
  • Retailers & Distributors must either join a Distributor Take-back Scheme (DTS) or offer customers in-store take-back of electrical and electronic equipment.
