Government consultation on compensation for pleural plaques

The Ministry of Justice consulted on appropriate ways of supporting people diagnosed with pleural plaques. This follows a recent decision by the House of Lords which reversed a 1984 High Court decision allowing individuals compensation for pleural plaques – an asymptomatic consequence of past exposure to asbestos.

If implemented, options in the consultation paper would be counter to the long established principles of negligence and could have consequences that reach well beyond asbestos exposure alone.
