GMB Launches New Organising Strategy, GMB@Work

At its June 2006 National Conference, the GMB trade union has launched a new organising strategy, GMB@Work and has also voted to end merger talks with Amicus and the T&GWU.

The GMB launched a new organising strategy, GMB@Work, at its National Conference in June 2006. According to a report in the July 2006 edition of Labour Research, the GMB@Work campaign will “re-focus the union’s organising work onto campaigning for collective action in each workplace on the industrial issues”.

GMB@Work will be “a national strategy applied flexibly in each part of the country ….. based on building a strong organisation in every workplace”.

The GMB has also stated that it is dropping the idea of partnership with employers and speaks of community and global organising as a form of renewal. The GMB also “strongly rejects the notion that the union should be sold as personal financial services”.

The launch of the campaign follows the overwhelming vote by delegates at this Conference to end merger talks with Amicus and the T&GWU.
