Progress Report on Proposed Merger of Amicus and the T&GWU

The proposed merger between Amicus and the T&GWU has taken a further step forward following the recent ratification of merger documents by the Executive Committee of Amicus. It now seems likely that a final decision on whether or not this merger goes ahead will take place in early 2007 following a ballot of both Amicus and T&GWU members.

The Executive Committee of Amicus has recently ratified the documents for the union’s proposed merger with the T&GWU.

The T&GWU is currently consulting its branches on these merger documents and its Executive Committee is due to make a final decision on this merger at its meeting on 22 November 2006. Following this, a T&GWU Delegate Conference will be held on 19 December 2006 to vote on these merger plans.

Both Amicus and the T&GWU are then due to ballot their members on this merger in early 2007 with the result expected to be announced in February 2007.

At this stage, it is anticipated that, if this merger goes ahead, Derek Simpson of Amicus and Tony Woodley of the T&GWU will be the Joint General Secretaries of this new union until a leadership election is held in 2010.
