Overview

Many of the employment rights that employees and other workers have are given to them by legislation. Some of these rights, such as the right to claim unfair dismissal and the right to a redundancy payment, depend on the employee or worker having completed a specified period of continuous employment.

This appendix explains the rules for calculating continuous employment. A table setting out the main employment rights together with their qualifying periods of service can be found elsewhere in this Guide (table of employment rights).
