Criminal Records Bureau checks for employers

Any employer or individual working with young people will need to consider whether a CRB check is necessary.

If you are going into schools to help with lessons, provide careers advice, or support an engineering club, for example, your local SETPOINT is able to guide you through the CRB process.  SETPOINTs are registered to countersign the declarations and manage the paperwork involved in this area.

The level of check required depends on a number of things - some LEAs specify the levels they need for everyone, others are driven by the school.

There are three levels of disclosure - Enhanced, Standard, and Basic.

For most of the kinds of work which engineers do with schools and college, the STANDARD disclosure is enough.  For teachers (which includes teaching modern apprenticeships) the Enhanced level will probably be necessary.

www.disclosure.gov.uk  contains advice and guidance for applicants on who needs to apply, and how to go about it.
