4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge launched

Following the success of F1 in Schools, a new engineering challenge for school age children has been launched.  Employers can help with all kinds of aspects of the challenge - why not get involved!

The Challenge

To design and build a remotely controlled four wheel drive vehicle that will negotiate challenging road surface obstacles and electronic tests, on a model off-road track that emulates the concept of a Land Rover.

The Process

Research

  • Use ICT
  • Investigate 'web' information
  • What makes a 4 x 4 different?
  • What is the Land Rover concept?
  • Remotely controlled commercial vehicles evaluation (teardown).
  • Component suppliers.

Design

A vehicle:

  • Using ICT – CAD.
  • Based on documented research.
  • To a specification set by Land Rover Engineers.
  • Incorporating commercially produced and self-build components.
  • To provide mechanical linkages, suspension, electronic systems, drive systems etc.

Manufacture

The designed vehicle using:

  • ICT – CAM/CNC.
  • Vacuum forming.
  • Electronic solutions.
  • Printed circuit boards.

Test and Evaluate

The prototypes.

The manufactured vehicle against the specification and demonstrate the development.

Compete

Each team will be required to test their vehicle against the Land Rover 4 x 4 In Schools Test Track emulating the formidable Land Rover off-road test tracks.

Each team will also be required to provide an electronic diary that clearly records the decision-making process and how that informed the design process.

Each team will also be required to make a 10 minute presentation to Land Rover Engineers outlining their process and highlighting the design, technology and business acumen aspects of the Challenge.

Regional and National Finals will be held.

This Challenge is designed to provide a GCSE project suitable for Engineering (Double Award) incorporating study in Resistant Materials, Electronic Products, Systems and Control.  The Land Rover 4 x 4 Challenge is supported by AQA and QCA.
