ETB - what can it do for you?

Following the Hawley Review, the Engineering Council split into two bodies in 2001. EC(UK) took responsibility for registration of Chartered and Incorporated Engineers, and Engineering Technicians, while ETB was created as a registered charity that aims to tackle the needs of the UK's science, engineering and technology industry and to create a unified platform and voice.

About ETB

The Engineering and Technology Board (ETB) is a registered charity that seeks to promote the vital contribution that scientists, engineers and technologists make to prosperity and quality of life.

While the organisation’s title focuses attention on engineering, in reality the route to engineering is via science and mathematics. Therefore the ETB aims to create a broad unified platform and voice across the entire spectrum of supply and demand in science, engineering and technology (SET) skills.

They have an active research and education policy division that produces reports on key issues in skills, careers and perceptions of SET and an annual statistical guide entitled “Engineering UK”.

They work in partnership with business and industry, Government, education and the profession to improve the perception of science, engineering and technology in the UK.

The driving force behind these partnerships is the desire to ensure a supply of appropriately skilled individuals to meet the present and future SET skill needs of UK plc.

Their product www.scenta.co.uk represents the largest of these partnerships in action. With over 110 content partners from across the SET community scenta provides a gateway to the best SET careers resources on the web.

The Engineering and Technology Board is financially supported by the registration fees of registered engineers, industry sponsorship and funding from the Department for Trade and Industry.

How the ETB can support employers?

Registration Grant Fund

The ETB has established a £1 million fund to increase the number of registered engineers and technicians in the UK over the next three years. The ETB welcomes approaches from employers, engineering institutions and other organisations concerned with the future of professional engineering in the UK. The ETB fund is available via grant application to assist those organisations to effectively promote membership of the Engineering Council UK’s register of professional engineers and technicians.

Engineering UK

The annual statistical publication of the ETB will be published on the 15 November 2005 and has been renamed “Engineering UK”. This builds upon and extends previous editions of the “ETB Digest of Engineering Statistics” published over the past eight years and has been renamed to reflect a new, broader scope.

The majority of the material focuses on the engineering profession and includes information which is relevant to the wider SET community. The report is structured around the career timeline of a typical engineer. It begins with a review of statistics relating to mathematics and science within UK schools, moving into Further Education and Work Based Learning and then into Higher Education. Work on engineering salaries and trends associated with professional registration are also reviewed along with the position of engineers in the economy. Finally, “Engineering UK” examines public perceptions of science, engineering and technology and careers related issues.

The ETB has launched a role models initiative as part of our innovative development of scenta.co.uk, the ETB’s online science, engineering and technology portal based around a careers core.

Our goal is to assemble the largest, most comprehensive and most diverse database of science, engineering and technology role models, made up of individuals who are able to write about the exciting and motivating aspects of their work.

As Dr Anil Kumar, the ETB’s Director of Education and Policy says, “We need to inspire and motivate all sections of our diverse society. Quite simply, individuals are more likely to be inspired by, and more likely to believe, someone who closely resembles them. We are therefore eager for anyone who wants to play an active part in helping inspire the next generation to step up and become a role model.”

In order to help you promote the project to your employees we have developed a Role Model Resource Pack which is available on the website. The pack includes project information and research, endorsements from Airbus UK and EDF Energy, an FAQ and adverts for promoting the project. The link also features online adverts for use on other websites and intranets. We also welcome invitations regarding syndication of the role models, i.e. displaying some or all of the role models on your website.

Simply log on to www.scenta.co.uk/rolemodels to find all the relevant information.

Help us to ensure that UK companies continue to attract today’s talented, creative and innovative young people to pursue a career in engineering.
