On 28 March 2007, DfES announced the successful consortia who had bid to deliver the new Specialised Diplomas from 2008. The five Specialised Diploma lines being piloted are construction and the built environment; engineering; health, society and development; IT; and creative and media.
Each consortia was allocated a category, as follows:
- Category 1: successful - recommended to go through for 2008 delivery with no conditions;
- Category 2: recommended to go through for delivery from September 2008 with conditions that will need to be met within 3 months;
- Category 3: not ready for September 2008 but with conditions which, if met, would mean they would be ready for September 2009;
- Category 4: will need to reapply to a subsequent Gateway.
A list of the successful consortia to deliver Engineering under Categories 1, 2, and 3 is available for download on the right.
45 consortia were successful in their bid to deliver Engineering in 2008, with a further 15 successful under Category 2.
This means that there will be potentially over 6,800 students of Engineering Diplomas starting their courses in September 2008. Nearly half of these (3,000+) will be studying at Level 2, with approx 2,300 at Level 1 and 1,500 at Level 3.
More details of successful consortia, and documents to support those now going forward with provision are available from the DfES 14-19 website.
The Engineering Specialised Diploma website has details of the content of the Diploma at each level.
