UK Skills is looking for employers to support skills competitions in engineering. The "Skills Olympics", otherwise known as WorldSkills, are coming to the UK in 2011.
However, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved before then...
How employers can get involved
UK Skills needs companies to:
- Put forward their talented young technicians and engineers for selection as WorldSkills Training Managers (Training Managers oversee the UK teams training and act as International Judges at the Competition).
- Encourage their employees to compete in regional, national and international competitions
- Host competitions
- Sponsor competitions
The engineers who will form the team for 2009 may already be working for your business – encouraging them to compete in competitions locally, then regionally, and finally nationally is the key to unlocking their world-beating potential. There is a great alignment between the skills and attributes developed through advanced apprenticeships, and WorldSkills performance.
The only commitment from employers is to offer those employees who compete or act as Training Managers reasonable time off to attend competitions. Competitors will also need to be released for further training if they go to WorldSkills. This additional training is managed by UK Skills and funded by UK Skills or its sponsors.
