The Languages Review

Following the fall in numbers of young people taking a modern foreign language at GCSE level, a review of language provision in schools was requested

Summary of EEF response

EEF supports the teaching and learning of languages, as the increasingly global nature of engineering and manufacturing business. Companies wishing to compete in the international market acknowledge and value the advantage which language learning gives.

However, the value of forcing young people to study a foreign language at Key Stage 4 is questionable. We believe that languages should be encouraged and easy to access but not compulsory at this level.
