It has never been more important to ensure your management team are aware of their responsibilities and your workforce informed of the standards you expect.
Discrimination law has been extended to add religion, sexual orientation and gender reassignment to the existing areas of race, gender and disability discrimination. The introduction of Age Discrimination affects all employees, not just minorities. This includes verbal and physical harassment. A company's only defence to a discrimination claim, for which compensation is unlimited, is to show they took all reasonable steps to prevent the act of discrimination occurring.
The implementation of the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 has further expanded discrimination law. These regulations represent the most significant piece of employment legislation in a generation. Not since the introduction of race and sex discrimination in the 1970s have we seen such far-reaching legislation. Unlike many of the more recent pieces of discrimination legislation which have been introduced, these regulations will not be confined to protecting the rights of a minority group - they will potentially affect every employee in your workforce.
