Our Approach

Ashley Heeley, Group HR Director, explains the background to the company’s childcare voucher provision. “We have offered childcare vouchers as part of our flexible benefits offering for three years now, and during that time we used a provider which offered a perfectly fine service up until a few months ago.”

However, for the latter part of 2009, Barrett Steel Limited experienced ongoing problems with the provider every pay cycle. This caused its payroll real headaches and, more worryingly, affected scheme members of staff who in some cases were receiving complaints from their carers. The company decided it was time to change provider when its employees were being adversely affected, and so began to investigate some alternatives.

“As a member of EEF we became aware of the Salary Extras childcare voucher scheme included as part of Advantages, offered by EEF’s partner Team Rewards. So we looked into this further.” says Ashley.

“The fact that the scheme is endorsed by EEF is important to us - we felt confident we would receive the kind of service we were promised, and the fact that the administration would be taken care of was very attractive.”

At the time of change, Salary Extras dealt with the entire transitional process to ensure HR and payroll wouldn’t encounter additional administration. It was also vital that employees should not experience disruption to their voucher provision, and that their childcarers would be paid accurately and quickly.

Ashley comments, “The transition was very good and ran smoothly. I liked the fact that Salary Extras took responsibility for running the whole changeover. The only problem we had was at our end with our browser compatibility, but this was quickly rectified.

“Our employees are pleased with the change, and one particular scheme member who had encountered significant problems with our old provider said she was highly delighted with Salary Extras - her childcarer has also been very impressed with the service and speed of her payments.

“The support for payroll and our employees has been fantastic. We have a nominated point of contact for business support, and her attention to detail has been exemplary.

“On a month-to-month basis the scheme runs very smoothly and reliably, and I appreciate the ongoing light touch administration which means we effectively don’t have to do anything! Overall the childcare voucher scheme is going swimmingly.

“The account management we have received from them has been great and on the back of our experience with this initiative we are now looking at marketing the childcare voucher scheme to increase awareness and uptake. We also want to explore other services and options on offer through Salary Extras and Team Rewards to increase our business relationship further”.
