EEF: Helping save £1 million
We provided immediate advice and guidance on how Marshall could tackle the changes required to make the HR function more effective and how it could implement what would be sweeping changes.
“Our major problem was with the management of sickness absence. It became clear that the number of productive days being lost was severely affecting our profitability – the days lost equated to more than 70 full time employees seated in one of the aircraft hangar doing nothing!”
We devised a tailored policy adapted for Marshall’s specific needs and supported by bespoke training, delivered on-site to all of Marshall’s line managers. They also used our training facilities at our Barleythorpe site.
“The measures have been incredibly successful. In 2006 we lost 14,000 productive days due to sickness absence. In 2007, this was reduced to less than 9,000 days lost - that’s the equivalent to employing 20 additional full time staff at no extra cost to the company and in total over the three years the changes have saved the company almost £1m.”
EEF: Employment Law and Health and Safety support
Marshall Aerospace uses EEF for advice on complex employment law and also for support when they were called to an employment tribunal.
“EEF’s help and support during the only employment tribunal case in our history was outstanding. Obviously, this was not something that we had any previous experience of dealing with and that alone can be daunting if there’s nowhere to turn – even if you’re confident you know the law.
EEF’s approach, detailed knowledge, advice and response times were remarkable and demonstrated alone the excellent value we receive from our membership."
“As part of the process, EEF took no action on our behalf without first clearly explaining what would be required and then seeking confirmation from us before proceeding. They got it right, every time, ensuring Marshall Aerospace’s diligence and credibility throughout the whole process.”
EEF: Expert advice on health and safety and the environment
EEF helps Marshall Aerospace on an ongoing basis with complex health, safety and environmental issues, always offering sound, practical advice and support - fast.
Marshall’s own health and safety officer is in regular contact with our local EEF offices and Marshall staff use our website for accessing a variety of related information. In addition Marshall receive regular e-bulletins on a range of employment, health, safety and environmental issues.
“Working with EEF has proved to be extremely useful on many levels as the organisation provides a solid link between UK industries and Brussels, as well as offering excellent business intelligence that we can use quickly.”
EEF: Keeping business fit for the future
“In today’s markets, as global economies are under such scrutiny, I feel there has never been a greater need for EEF’s continued support, information and training, to ensure our managers and teams are well informed about market conditions, HR regulations and changes in legislation.”
Marshall Aerospace is a proactive member of EEF and they are involved in our East of England Regional Council. Our 10 Regional Councils give members exclusive insight into the latest developments in manufacturing and the quarterly meetings provide an opportunity to talk about the local business environment with peers in senior management.
The Councils also help us gather views on the impact of policy and regulation at both national and local level, so we can feed them into our discussions with government policymakers.
“EEF’s advice on how other manufacturing organisations with EEF membership are embracing change and further developing their businesses helps us continually evaluate our own procedures and helps keep us in shape to face future demands.”
