National Winners of the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2012

The national winners of the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2012 were announced at an exclusive black tie event on 31 January 2013 at the Great Connaught Rooms in London.

The national finalists were each regional winners of the 2012 Future Manufacturing Awards who went on to compete in our national final.

Our national winners are fine examples of the drive for excellence and passionate enthusiasm that makes manufacturing great.

The Business Growth Award

National Winner Express Engineering (Thompson) Ltd, Gateshead

By investing in meeting key customers' needs, Express Engineering has gained a strong order book, employee engagement and profits on course to grow by more than 60 per cent in two years.

National Runner-up Milltech Precision Engineering Ltd, Norwich

The Skills and Training Award

National Winner SCA Hygiene Products Ltd, Salford

SCA created a sustainable, cost-effective and flexible First Line Leadership development programme that improved performance, bringing the workforce together and engaging workers and management at all levels.

National Runner-up Calsonic Kansei North East

The Innovative Operating Practices Award

National Winner MedImmune UK Limited, Liverpool

MedImmune UK automated a highly labour-intensive manual process, developing ground-breaking equipment for Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine monovalent bulk and cutting manpower by the equivalent of 20 full time employees.

National Runner-up Calsonic Kansei Sunderland

The People Management Award

National Winner Devonport Royal Dockyard Ltd, Plymouth

A Time Out for Safety initiative took Devonport Royal Dockyard from a hierarchical command-and-control business to an organisation which engages with all employees and involves them in generating constructive change.

National Runner-up Kerry Foods, Enniskillen

The Environmental Efficiency Award

National Winner Nuaire Ltd, Caerphilly

In two years, Nuaire’s environmental and efficiency measures reduced its carbon emissions and waste sent to landfill, achieved significant savings in energy costs and increased manufacturing output.

National Runner-up Qioptiq Ltd, Denbighshire

The Green and Growth Award

National Winner ABB Limited, Warrington

ABB devised a no fuss on-site appraisal service that demonstrates the energy saving and carbon reduction potential of fitting variable-speed drives.

National Runner-up Parker Hannifin Manufacturing UK Limited, Dewsbury

The Outstanding Export Award

National Winner Fracino, Birmingham

In four years, Fracino has built a global export business representing 25 percent of turnover. Export sales are targeted to account for 33 percent of turnover in 2013 and 50 percent in five years’ time.

Highly Commended Daniamant Ltd, Portsmouth

The Outstanding Achievement by a First Year Apprentice Award

National Winner Devon Sumner, Airbus Operations Ltd

Devon’s competence, commitment and enthusiasm have earned her the respect of her colleagues as she begins her on-the-job training, while studying for an engineering honours degree.

National Runner-up David Firth, Marshall Aerospace

The Outstanding Achievement by a Final Year Apprentice Award

National Winner Oliver Jukes, Rolls Royce plc

Oliver Jukes is a future Chief Design Engineer in the making, says Rolls- Royce Engineering Fellow Russ Payne. With viable inventions already under his belt, Oliver’s current aim is to be a fully proficient design engineer.

National Runner-up Jamie Barlow, Xylem

The Outstanding Achievement by a Young Engineering Student Award

National Winner Anna Ebblewhite, St. Bede’s Catholic Comprehensive School#

Aged only 16, Anna has managed teams winning prizes in engineering competitions while studying for GCSEs and the Manufacturing Young Apprentice scheme. Her dream job is to be Team Principal for Red Bull F1.
