Advent 2011: 24 facts about manufacturing

Over on twitter, we've had a run down of 24 facts about manufacturing. In true Christmas spirit - in case you missed them - here is a summary:

1   

Manufacturing accounts for 10% of the economy, and has accounted for about 25% of growth since the recession ONS
2 Manufacturing has seen eight consecutive quarters of growth ONS
3 There are approximately 124,000 manufacturing companies in the UK ABI
4 Manufacturing accounts for about 10% of employment in the UK ABI
5 EEF's Business Trends survey shows that a balance of 12% of companies saw output expand in the last three months EEF
6 In the last year productivity in manufacturing rose 4.9% compared with 1.4% in the economy as a whole ONS
7 Motor vehicles was the best performing sector in the year to October 2011, growing 10.6% IoP
8 In the last decade productivity in manufacturing rose 45% compared with 14% in the economy as a whole ONS
9 UK goods exports hit a record £26.5bn in October PPI
10 R&D intensity (ratio of R&D to income) in manufacturing is around 4%, rising to 15% for pharmaceuticals (1.6% for the whole economy) HMT

Today's PMI showed manufacturing performing at its strongest since 1994.

Manufacturing is an important employer, accounting for 11% of employment in England, & more outside the SE

Manufacturing accounts for three quarters of the total amount spent on R&D by UK business

UK manufacturing is about more than production: 2/3 companies offer services on the back of their products

EEF's Business Trends survey shows that manufacturing is growing strongly & firms are positive about new orders

The Index of Production shows the manufacturing recovery maintaining momentum, with 0.6% growth in October

One in seven manufacturers that had shipped production offshore are bringing activity back.

UK exports in goods grew £0.9bn (4.1%) in October

Nearly half of the UK's exports come from manufacturing

(on this date) there was one "manufactured" band left in XFactor ... (proving how diverse UK manufacturing can be)

Day 6: EEF's survey shows that manufacturing output expanded at a record pace in the last quarter 

EEF's Business Trends Survey shows that a balance of 33% of manufacturers saw output increase in the last three months. New orders are close to records highs as well, with a balance of 32% of companies seeing an increase in orders. (More info: here)

Day 2: Goods exports grew by 20% between Q2 2009 and Q2 2010

Not only this, but since the recession, exports in goods have grown more strongly than total exports

Day 1: Manufacturing is growing faster that at any time since 1994, which was confirmed by today's strong PMI.
