In our first report of 2012 we look ahead to a year that is likely to be defined by the response to the eurozone crisis.  
 
While we expect growth this year, we are forecasting this to be comparatively weak resulting from improvements in net trade and investment, but against a backdrop of weak consumer and government spending.

In the January 2011 edition of Economic Prospects we highlighted some of the key risks to the economic recovery: government cuts; rising commodity prices; access to finance; and the eurozone crisis. These have all proved relevant in the first half of the year.
 
Our central expectation is for modest growth to continue, but in this mid-year review of economic prospects we consider some of the domestic and international indicators we will be watching that night suggest that the recovery is beginning to drift from our central forecast.
