The main aim of the competition which is co-sponsored by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers is to recognise and celebrate the achievement of apprentices whilst also promoting the benefits of the Apprenticeship route to an exciting and interesting career in engineering.
The competition now in its 12th year, attracted entries from 80 apprentices. The quality of entrants this year for all the categories, both 1st and 3rd year awards was high. Adam Robson a 3rd year from Stone & Webster Limited, Milton Keynes emerged as the overall winner.
We were delighted to have as our Guest of Honour Phil Willis MP who is the Chair of the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee. During his address Phil said,
“It has been a pleasure to tour the stands, to talk to such an engaging and enthusiastic group of young people and I thank you and all concerned for your hard work on our behalf.
The standard is quite exceptional and I think any employer would be delighted to have any of our finalists on their workforce. Equally any apprentice would be pleased to join what can only be described as one of the most enthusiastic groups of employers I have ever met!
Let me also thank Engineering Employers Federation for sponsoring this event and for their unerring support for the apprenticeship scheme, for training and for their belief in young people. Young people do not rise to low expectations and you demonstrate a belief in the ability of youth that is all too often missing in today’s society.
Engineering employers, be they members of EEF or not have consistently demonstrated a belief in work based skills training at times when many sectors of industry and commerce abandoned apprenticeships altogether.
The fact that so many local companies are here today, not only to support their own apprentices, but to demonstrate a commitment to the future of engineering and manufacturing in this country, is deeply humbling.”
