What to do

The following points summarise what you should do to decide whether your site is potentially contaminated and what you might do to protect the environment:

  • Check whether your site has ever been the location of potentially contaminating activities.
  • Find out whether contaminating material could be present in the ground beneath your site.
  • Determine whether contamination could be moving and causing contamination beyond your boundaries.
  • Find out whether there are any processes taking place on your site which could be causing contamination.
  • Determine what you need to do to prevent contamination occurring.
  • Carry out any investigations necessary to establish the risks on your site.
