The Eco-design for Energy-using Products Regulations 2007 (SI 2007, No 2037)
The Energy-using Products (EuP) Regulations came into force on 11 August 2007. They implement a directive of the same name (2005/32/EC) which is a key element of EU Integrated Product Policy.
The eco-design requirements of products address the environmental impacts resulting from product manufacture (processes and materials used), usage (energy/water consumption and emissions) and disposal (waste generation).
Not all energy-using products are covered by the legislation, only those meeting
criteria such as important environmental impact, volume of trade and clear potential for improvement.
The listed products include hot water boilers, household refrigerators, freezers and their combinations and ballasts for fluorescent lighting. (The new list revokes previous regulations relating to energy efficiency of these products.)
The requirements are to demonstrate conformity with the regulations by affixing a CE mark in the usual way.
Products which have already been awarded the Eco-label are considered as compliant with the implementing measures. In addition, although the EMAS registration on its own would not automatically equate to compliance, businesses which have an EMAS registration, which includes product design, may use their environmental management system for demonstrating that their product complies with the applicable implementing measure.
