This list of dangerous susbstances will be amended during the coming years, after the adoption of the new EU Water Framework Directive.

  • Aldrin
  • Atrazine
  • Azinphos-methyl
  • Cadmium and its compounds
  • DDT (including metabolites DDD and DDE)
  • 1,2-dichloroethane
  • Dichlorvos
  • Dieldrin
  • Endosulfan
  • Endrin
  • Fenitrothion
  • Gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane
  • Hexachlorobenzene
  • Hexachlorobutadiene
  • Malathion
  • Mercury and its compounds
  • PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls)
  • Pentachlorophenol
  • Simazine
  • Trichlorobenzene (all isomers)
  • Trifluralin
  • Tributtylin compounds
  • Triphenyltin compounds

This is the UK’s priority list of substances (introduced in 1989), which are subject to strict control in order to prevent contamination of water.

The list is used as a basis for defining: ‘special category effluent’ - under the Trade Effluents (Prescribed Processes and Substances) Regulations 1989 (as amended).

The list includes EU List I substances (the ‘Black List’).
