Guidance on Environmental Permitting

Relevance: Multi-media releases from processes considered to have the greatest potential for pollution.

The Environment Agency has published a ‘regulatory package’ containing guidance for EP. A summary of the most relevant guidance available can be found in Appendix 1. This includes general guidance manuals, horizontal guidance and sector guidance specifying BAT requirements.

Sectoral Guidance

The existing sectoral guidance for IPC will be valid until that sector moves across to the IPPC regime. New sector IPPC guidance has been / is being produced . It will apply immediately to new installations, or those with substantial changes. The Appendices contain a list of Sectoral Guidance for Part A(1), Part A(2) and Part B processes.

Cross-Sectoral and Generic Guidance on EP

A set of generic Technical Guidance Notes (TGNs) for IPC provide general, and typically cross-sectoral, guidance on matters such as abatement, monitoring and pollution dispersion (including the determination of stack heights). See Appendix 3.

The Environment Agency has also produced a set of horizontal guidance notes that apply across all sectors. See Appendix 1.
