The Environment Agency publishes a series of Pollution Prevention Guidelines (PPGs). These outline how operators of various facilities can implement pollution prevention measures, particularly with regard to preventing water pollution and spills. A full list of PPGs is provided in Appendix 11.
They include: PPG 1 General guide to the prevention of controlled waters; PPG 5 Works in, near or liable to affect watercourses; PPG 11 Preventing pollution on industrial sites.
The Environment Agency produces a series of 53 Groundwater Vulnerability Maps (1:100,000) covering England and Wales. The maps are intended to assist with the assessment of risk of groundwater to contamination, as part of its policy and practice for the protection of groundwater.
These are available from the Stationery Office (refer to Appendix 14 for contact details). The Environment Agency website under subject headings ‘Water Resources’ then ‘Groundwater’ has a ‘map picker’ to help you choose which map covers the area of interest.
