What to do

  • Set the scope of your sustainability agenda (for instance whether you address corporate responsibility issues).
  • Benchmark against the performance of market leaders in your industry.
  • Introduce an Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Review your use of resources.
  • Set up systems for monitoring and measuring water and energy use and waste production. Compare the figures year on year and against production output.
  • Appoint a person in charge of water use, waste minimisation and energy use.
  • Carry out regular energy, waste and water audits (a simple, regular site-walk to identify areas where savings can be made).
  • Set sustainability targets, such as for reduction of energy and water use and waste production.
  • Ensure all staff are fully aware of the importance of the need to minimise water and energy use and waste production.
