What to do

Remember these basic tips:

• Examine your waste materials – carry out a waste minimisation survey, where does the waste arise?
• Is any of your waste identified as hazardous waste according to regulations?
• Is your waste stored securely so it can’t escape by leaking into the ground or being blown away?
• Are you segregating different wastes effectively? Poor segregation may cost you money.
• Who takes the waste away? Do they have the correct licence from the Environment Agency?
• Where is your waste disposed of or processed? Does the site operator have the correct licence from the Environment Agency?
• Have you audited your waste carriers and disposal/recycling contractors?
• Check that your waste records are complete and in accordance with regulations.
• Repeat these actions regularly.
