New guidance on work and health

National advice on common health problems is available from the TSO, sponsored by a number of organisations, and endorsed by the National Director for Health and Work, Professor Dame Carol Black, and by EEF.

The leaflet challenges how we think about common health problems and helps to dispel misunderstandings. For example one myth is that common health problems are caused by work. In fact they are not, they are common across the whole population and not caused by work in the first place.

As well as exploding many myths, the leaflet gives advice on obstacles to recovery and getting people back to work after illness. It encourages all players to work together: employer, worker, union, insurer and healthcare.

The advice concludes that work is generally good for health and well-being. Most common health problems can be accommodated at work if:

  • a flexible approach is adopted, and
  • all players work together to overcome obstacles.

The leaflet is available free from the TSO website.

The leaflet links well with EEF’s extensive, practical guidance on Managing Absence being given at a number of seminars nationwide. For details visit the seminar webpages.
