What to do

You need to:

- eliminate the need for manual handling if reasonably practicable, through mechanisation, redesigning tasks and automation;

- where this is not reasonably practicable, you need to have all groups of manual handling tasks assessed by a competent person (even if the HSE MAC tool is used) and take all appropriate measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels (where they cannot be eliminated through mechanisation); and

- ensure that all departmental managers are fully aware of the results of the manual handling risk assessments and are directly involved in the implementation of the risk reduction measures so they can maintain adequate control in the future.
