Terminology

Levels db(A) Leq — this is the maximum reading taken directly from the noise meter being used to determine the instantaneous noise level for any particular task or environment, measured in decibels (db(A)).

Duration of exposure — this is the length of time that operators would be exposed to the noise level on the meter at any one session.

Fractional exposure — this is the ‘amount’ of noise that the operator(s) would have been exposed to for the level read and the exposure time. Fractional exposure can be determined using the HSE calculator referred to above.

Total exposure — is the sum of the fractional exposures experienced in the period being considered, e.g. a day or week.

L EP,D db(A) — is the daily personal noise exposure. This is numerically equal to the total exposure where the total exposure is the sum of the fractional exposures for any one day.

Peak action level — is a sound pressure of 200 pascals (approximately 140 db(A)) generally only likely from guns, cartridge operated tools or similar.

Recommended method for completing pro-forma

  • For each task/environment, use a calibrated noise meter to record the maximum noise levels likely to be produced at or near the point where the operator’s ears are most likely to be. Record this in the column headed ‘Levels db(A) Leq’.
  • Ascertain the maximum time that the operator(s) would be exposed to this noise level under the worst, reasonably foreseeable circumstances and record this in the column headed ‘Duration of Exposure’.
  • Determine the amount of exposure to noise by using the HSE noise calculator and record the result in the column headed ‘Fractional Exposure (f)’.
  • Add up all the fractional exposures for the period under consideration (generally a day) and record this in the box entitled ‘Total Exposure (f)’ or ‘L EP,D db(A)’, as appropriate.
  • Where applicable, record the peak action level in the box headed ‘Peak action level exceeded’.
  • Complete the assessment box based on the values of total exposure or L EP,D db(A) recorded.
  • Repeat the assessment process at least every two years or after significant changes have been made.
