what to do

- The first and second action levels in the 2005 Noise Regulations are, on average, 68 percent lower than the equivalent levels in the 1989 Noise Regulations, so the impact of the new requirements is likely to be significant.

- Noise assessments need to be conducted by a competent person. The assessments should detail specific actions to reduce noise levels, where appropriate.

- Line managers should keep a copy of the assessment report and be actively involved in the implementation of:

  • any corrective actions;
  • organising any health surveillance deemed necessary by the assessment;
  • providing hearing protection, where appropriate; and
  • supervising the mandatory wearing of hearing protection, where appropriate.

- Use the noise assessment record form as a guide.

- Review assessments regularly.
