If OHSAS 18001 is being considered as part of an integrated management system (IMS), with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 already in place, careful consideration is needed on how this should be achieved. It is not simply a matter of ‘bolting on’ the requirements of OHSAS 18001 to your existing system. This is unlikely to result in the savings that can arise from a truly integrated management system.
Effective integration will require a searching review of all your management system requirements at ‘grass roots’ level so that the three aspects (quality, environment, and health and safety) can be fully embedded into the everyday management functions.
The approach is likely to vary significantly from company to company. Guidance is being prepared by BSI on integration. More detailed bespoke advice to cover your specific circumstances can be provided by contacting your local EEF Association.
