introduction
In this chapter, we define what a confined space is. We also explain the hazards associated with confined space working and the management systems needed to ensure that all such work is carried out safely.
Working in a ‘confined space’ means much more than working in an area where there is not much room to move.
Work in confined spaces is controlled by the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997. These contain three key duties which you need to fulfil:
- only enter a confined space if it is not reasonably practicable to do the work in any other way;
- if entry into a confined space is unavoidable, follow a safe system of work; and
- put in place adequate emergency arrangements before the work starts.
