Emergency arrangements

All work in a confined space should be supported, at all times, by suitable arrangements to cover all foreseeable emergencies, in line with the findings of the risk assessment. The emergency arrangements shall:

  • reduce the risks, so far as is reasonably practicable, to any person required to put rescue arrangements into operation;
  • include the provision and maintenance of resuscitation equipment, where it is likely to be required because of the specified risks;
  • cover specific aspects including:

    • raising the alarm and rescue arrangements;
    • safeguarding the rescuers;
    • fire safety;
    • control of adjacent or nearby plant;
    • provision of first aid;
    • calling and assisting the public emergency services;
    • training; and
    • the size of openings to allow safe access and egress.
