Introduction

In this chapter, we examine the threat of fire to businesses, how to assess the risks and how to manage these.

Fires at work threaten the lives of people and businesses. The average cost of a fire in a commercial building is estimated to be some £58,000. A large proportion of businesses that close temporarily because of a fire never re-open.

Arson remains the biggest single cause of fire, followed by faulty electrical equipment. A small fire can spread rapidly. The storage and use of flammable and/or pressurised substances significantly increases the risk of a major fire or explosion.

Taking positive action to prevent fires starting is the best approach. Ensure that you know the:

  • risks of a fire starting in any part of your business;
  • arrangements for:
    • evacuating people;
    • detecting and fighting a fire;
    • maintaining escape routes, and;
    • maintaining alarms/detectors and fire fighting equipment.
  • legal requirements and whether you comply; and
  • requirements of your property insurer.
