Introduction

In this chapter, we introduce a five-step approach to managing risks from slips and trips and provide a checklist of effective control measures.

Over a third of all major injuries reported each year are caused as a result of a slip or trip (the single most common cause of injuries at work). These accidents cost employers over £500 million a year in lost production and other costs.

What the law says

The risks of slips and trips should be assessed as part of your general risk assessments (see risk assessments). The HSE website contains useful information about the risks associated with slips and trips, with guidance to help prevent/reduce the incidence of injuries.
