Introduction

In this chapter, we examine what is meant by work at height and how to comply with the Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Working at height no longer only means working 2m or more above ground level. The Work At Height Regulations 2005(see Summary Sheet tbc) apply to all work where there is a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury. One of the reasons for the change is that significant numbers of serious injuries result from falls of much less than 2m.

The overriding principle in the regulations is that you must do all that is reasonably practicable to prevent anyone falling. To achieve this, the regulations apply the classic hierarchy of control (outlined below) to working at height by placing specific duties on both you and your employees, as described below.
