What situations do the regulations apply to?

The regulations apply to all work at height where there is a risk of injury from a fall, regardless of where that work is. Exceptions include paid instruction or leadership in caving or climbing by way of sport, recreation, team building or similar activities.

In an attempt to demonstrate the full scope of hazards and risks associated with working at height, the HSE has also published a number of posters and leaflets on its website, for example, on:

  • avoiding falls from vehicles;
  • cleaning windows safely; and
  • not using chairs to reach items located on high shelves.
