Recruiting graduates?  What can you expect them to offer?

CIHE, with the Higher Education Academy and supported by Graduate Prospects, has published a set of "employability profiles" for graduates in over 50 disciplines

If you are taking on graduates in any discipline, you may find it useful to consult these profiles, which aim to summarise the skills and competence you should be able to expect from a graduate.

Subjects covered of particular relevance to engineering and manufacturing companies include:

  • Engineering
  • Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research
  • Physics
  • Computing
  • Biosciences
  • Materials
  • Business and Management
  • Economics

Each profile takes the form of a series of "can do" statements, followed by text about the nature of the subject, how it is taught, what kind of people study it, and what kind of sectors/roles previous graduates in the discipline are to be found.

The publication also details how to use the profiles in your recruitment.

Copies of "Degrees of Skill: Student Employability Profiles - a guide for employers" are available from the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE).
