The recurring theme of the strategy is the need for us all to value water and not inadvertently waste it. The strategy illustrates the importance of changing perceptions to water use, viewing it as a critical resource on which we are dependent and which is limited in its seasonal and regional availability. It also highlights the carbon footprint associated with water use and wastage (i.e. the energy required to supply, treat and distribute the water to where it is used, and to remove and treat wastewater).
The strategy recognises that the widespread use of water meters in the industrial and commercial sector is, and will continue to be, a powerful financial incentive for businesses to reduce the amount of water they use.
Government is keen to continue to work with industry to promote awareness of the need to use water resources more efficiently, and to encourage industry-led water efficiency initiatives that do not compromise health and hygiene standards.
Through the Water Technology List (WTL) the Government encourages manufacturers to use water more sustainably, with products on the list having to meet predefined water saving criteria.
Businesses investing on WTL listed technologies can benefit from accelerated tax relief by claiming the Enhanced Capital Allowance on their capital investment. Envirowise manages Defra’s Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme to support businesses investing in water efficient technologies.
In 2008, the work of the Water Saving Group will be extended to review the arrangements for promoting water efficiency in the industrial and commercial sectors and consider whether there is a case for further measures.
