North East eco-friendly schools race at Croft racing circuit

Release date: 15/07/2008

20 schools will be racing their electric-powered cars designed and built from scratch at Croft Racing Circuit tomorrow (16th July).

The youngsters will be competing in the Greenpower school electric car races, sponsored by EEF. Teams of children from primary and secondary schools across the region and beyond are hoping to cover the greatest distance over four hours, using their battery-powered vehicles as they vie for a place at the final, to be held at the famous Goodwood circuit in October.

Schools from as far afield as South Shields and Alnwick will be competing at the historic motorsport venue against teams from across England. All the cars have been designed and built from scratch using customised kits. (Schools taking part are listed below).

The North East Greenpower heat offers schools in the region an exciting insight into careers in engineering as they design, build and race their own eco-race cars.

Geoff Clack from EEF said: “The Greenpower competition gives school pupils hands-on experience of engineering, it is an excellent way for them to see how enjoyable and rewarding engineering can be.”

By getting pupils hooked on engineering while they’re still at school Greenpower and EEF hope to inspire the next generation to develop solutions.
