Strategic approach to the environment can help Manufacturers cut costs

Companies are being urged to find out how a strategic approach to the environment can significantly reduce their costs, at events being held across England this autumn.

Organised by EEF, the Manufacturers organisation and British Gas Business (BGB) one of the UK’s leading energy suppliers, the event on the theme of "Manufacturing the green economy" will be a half day briefing and networking lunch with experts from both BGB and EEF available to give advice to companies.

These half day conferences will provide companies with an insight to the low carbon innovation agenda in the UK with the regional impacts explained, and will then look in depth at the strategic tools to reduce costs through minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing operations and supply chain.

In particular there will be information on how manufacturers can cut costs by:

reducing raw material use

saving energy

reducing waste

developing and implementing an environmental strategy using an Environmental Management System and lean manufacturing

"The event builds on our one day conferences earlier in the year on how to survive the recession" according to Gareth Stace, Head of Climate and Environment policy at EEF who will be leading the session on resource efficiency.

"In these tough economic times you have to be competitive to survive. EEF will provide real case studies from manufacturers in their own area where the advice we are giving has made a real difference to the business, substantially cutting their costs." Gareth added

The benefits of energy management in helping to reduce costs and deal with regulation such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment will also be explained by Delvin Lane, Head of Energy360 at British Gas Business

"Businesses across the UK are currently facing a myriad of regulation, unpredictable energy costs and customers ever increasing demands on green products and services. British Gas Business we will be continuing to support our own customers and non customers through these unpredictable times and are looking forward to working with the EEF’s members."

Help from EEF recently led to a Midlands company

reducing electricity and gas consumption by 12% and 30% respectively and them achieving a zero cost waste management system.

The half day events will be held in Bristol, Sheffield, Leamington Spa, London and Chorley in October. Companies wishing more information or to book a place should visit

Notes

The events will be held in Bristol, Sheffield, Leamington Spa and Chorley with a final event London. The events would run from late September to mid October 2009:

Chorley 29th September,

Leamington Spa 1st October,

Bristol 8th October

Sheffield 14th October

London 20th October

British Gas Business (BGB) and EEF recently set up a scheme to monitor energy management at their member companies. The ‘Energy Challenge’ will provide companies with advice and monitoring of their sites to see where energy is being wasted and how they can cut their energy bills.

EEF have also launched an energy benchmarking service to help companies negotiate the best possible tariffs for their energy supply. ‘Bench your bills’ will reveal what manufacturing businesses across the UK are paying for their gas and electricity, so companies can see whether they are paying a fair price or over the odds.

Companies can still sign up to these services by visiting http://www.manufacturingyourfuture.co.uk/conserve-your-energy.php
