Sickness absence and rehabilitation survey 2009

This is the sixth national survey of EEF member organisations which looks at their experience of sickness absence and rehabilitation, and the second to be undertaken in partnership with Unum, the UK’s leading disability insurer.

The questionnaire was sent to 4,069 member companies in January 2009 asking them about sickness absence at their organisation in 2008.

Responses were received from 697 organisations which employ a total of 145,235 staff (a 17% response rate). The response is comparable with the past three years’ surveys (625, 622 and 629 responses). Therefore, where possible, we have looked at trends from year to year. The questionnaire asked for information in areas such as:trends in sickness absence

  • causes of sickness absence
  • management of sickness absence, including employee
  • benefits
  • rehabilitation in practice, including barriers to rehabilitation
  • labour turnover
