Responding to the announcement EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation believes that industry has a responsibility to play its part in addressing Climate Change.
However, it firmly believes that any new strategy must combine the need to reduce emissions with managing the impact on the economy. In this respect, EEF will be looking to the new Climate Change Committee to apply a ‘Competitiveness Test’ for any new measures introduced in the UK, based on the following:
Be part of a coherent strategy
Minimise the impact on competitiveness
Minimise administrative costs
Not overlap with other policies
EEF Director General, Martin Temple said:
“We welcome the draft Climate Change Bill’s approach to 5 year rolling targets on carbon emissions, overseen by an independent Climate Change Committee. However, any measures introduced must pass a rigorous ‘Competitiveness Test’ applied by the Committee: rigid annual targets would clearly fail such a test”
