New HSE guidance on using local exhaust ventilation

HSE have published a simple and invaluable guide to buying and using local exhaust ventilation (LEV).

Frequently LEV doesn’t do the job it was purchased for, namely to protect health of employees. Often this is because it is either the wrong type or has not been properly installed, used or maintained.

Clearing the air gives tips on buying the right LEV and using and maintaining it properly.

The guide states that the LEV supplier should provide

  • A user manual (with a general specification of what the LEV system is designed to control and how it achieves control)
  • A logbook
  • A commissioning report

The leaflet sets out what each of these should include.

It also gives advice on checking and maintenance, keeping records, what the thorough examination and test consists of, and finally a very helpful checklist.

Further information is available from:

- Clearing the air free leaflet (INDG 408)

- ‘Controlling airborne contaminants at Work’ HSG258 available from HSE Books

- and through the HSE website on Local Exhaust Ventilation Systems
